Some Mural Making Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them

Most beginning muralists find that painting humans is hard, particularly faces. We're all so used to looking at humans that we require a higher degree of
accuracy for renderings of people than we do with other subjects. If your chosen
theme requires people I suggest you make them simple and cartoon-like or
change your people into an assortment of animals.

Mermaids and horses also give beginner muralists trouble, probably for the
same reason I mentioned above. If either you or your child has your heart set
on mermaids or horses I suggest you practice first drawing them, then painting a
few on a smaller scale. If you find yourself getting the hang of it then go for it. If
not then switch to a simpler scheme before you find yourself running out of
energy and patience.

Sports murals can be hard for beginners but if your son or daughter has a
favorite team it's usually pretty easy to paint a good replica of the team logo. Make it big!

If you're going to copy popular cartoon characters look more to the future than the present. Barney the Dinosaur may not please a child by the time she's a six year old. Your safest bet is to go with the classics--Winnie the Pooh, Peter
Rabbit and perhaps the Lion King.
