Conclusions
For an existing facility, implementing many of the environmental
enhancements mentioned above can be costly. However several
improvements may require more imagination than money. While not all
patients can have south or southeast facing windows, perhaps most of the
patients with symptoms of depression or with sleep disorders can. Scenic
window views and courtyard space for gardens may not be available but a
modest investment in landscape artwork may be quite feasible. I delve
deeper into the issue of artwork in Part Three.
And finally I can personally attest to the value of an effective wayfinding
system. For three years before becoming a children's mural artist I designed
and marketed architectural signage, consulted on sign related ADA-
compliance issues and developed directional sign systems (mostly for
schools). As an artist I have designed hospital directional sign systems as an
integrated part of unit-wide mural projects. If a facility replaces an out-dated
wayfinding system with a new well-designed system, it will automatically
improve the visitor's experience and it will enhance his or her impression of
the hospital. It will also eventually increase staff productivity and may even
improve morale.
